Laurel Wise

2006 Graduate

What did you read at University?

I read English Literature and Philosophy (BA) and the University of Sheffield.

What were you looking for in your career?

Like many graduates, I had a great time at University and picked up valuable life skills but I was unsure about what I wanted to do in my career. All I knew was that I wanted to work for a professional organisation where I could learn more about a variety of businesses.

Why did you choose Digby Morgan?

The reason I chose Digby Morgan was because I read the profiles of their recent graduates and a lot of them sounded very similar to me! My mind was made up when I attended the assessment day and met a number of consultants from the different teams. I really enjoyed talking with everyone and they spoke with enthusiasm about working at Digby Morgan.

Which division do you work in?

I work in HR Resourcing. We are a team of 13 consultants who recruit HR professionals from the entry level up to £50,000. We work with a variety of clients and I have enjoyed building relationships with my client base.

Please describe a typical day

Please describe a typical day? There is not really a typical day as things change all the time! But to give you an idea of how my day was today: I got into work and had a cup of coffee before sitting down to check my emails. I look through the new applications for the jobs I am working on before giving potential candidates a call and inviting some in for an interview. The best part of the shop for me is being able to speak with such a variety of people. After checking the applications, I then met a candidate who I had in mind for a particular role before arranging interviews for candidates whose CV’s I sent to a client yesterday. The afternoon saw me going to meet a client to discuss a new vacancy they need help in filling before coming back to the office to a full inbox! Before going home, I will call candidates who have interviews tomorrow and brief them fully on what they can expect from the meeting.

What has your role at Digby Morgan given you from a self-development perspective?

My job has definitely improved my commercial awareness which was quite non-existent before! I really enjoy working with such a variety of clients.

What advice would you give to candidates thinking of applying to the Associate programme?

The advice that I would give to potential applicants would be to ask as many questions as you feel you need to at all stages of the recruitment process – everyone is very friendly and keen to help you. But before you get to that stage, be honest with yourself about what you are looking for from your job – it is important that the company you work for reflects your values and can support you in meeting your aspirations.
