Laura Todman

2006 Graduate

What did you read at University?

I read (BA) Economic and Social History at the University of Birmingham.

What were you looking for in your career?

I was looking for something that was varied and would always give me the opportunity to progress.  I enjoy working hard and will not settle for something that does not challenge me. Ideally I would like to follow a structured career path but that is not always possible so I hope each career move I make takes me in a positive direction. I am ambitious and hope to have a career that matches my aspirations.

Why did you choose Digby Morgan?

I chose Digby Morgan because the company invests heavily in graduates and provides the opportunity to gain a lot of experience very quickly. Joining Digby Morgan can provide a graduate with exposure to different industry sectors and enables one to build strong commercial acumen, putting you on the path to a successful career.

Another reason for my choice to join Digby Morgan was the people. Everybody I met was friendly and welcoming. I sensed a very sociable environment and this has been reflected in the numerous social events organised by the company. I also liked the idea of working with other graduates, as well as more experienced members of staff. When meeting with people from Digby Morgan you are able to talk to experienced and successful recruiters who joined as graduates as little as a year before and see how far they have come.

Which division do you work in?

I joined the HR Resourcing division in June 2006.

Please describe a typical day

Each day is varied depending on any appointments I might have and the status of current projects. As I write this I have two client meetings today, so my day will be planned around these. I normally need about half an hour in the morning to get my day in order and plan what I am going to do. This will involve prioritising any phone calls I need to make and any meetings or interviews I need to set up. Following that I will need to prepare for my first client meeting. As I have not met with this client before I must do some research on the company and ensure that I am up to date on any work Digby Morgan has done with them in the past. Following my meeting I must get straight to work on the new role, sourcing and talking to candidates. This applies to my second meeting of the day as well, however we do lots of work with this client so it will be more of an informal get together over coffee. My day is filled with lots of networking with clients and candidates, as well as members of the team here at HR Resourcing. Some days are great as I’ll make a placement, pick up a role or find a great candidate. Others can be frustrating but that’s the nature of recruitment and that’s what keeps it exciting.

What has your role at Digby Morgan given you from a self-development perspective?

My role at Digby Morgan has improved my confidence and resilience. I have learnt to deal with people at all levels and have established myself within the company and with clients and candidates. I have learnt to be much more resilient and to remain positive when things don’t go according to plan, and to work under pressure and to deadlines. I have developed my commercial acumen and feel I have built up a strong knowledge of different industry sectors and the way they work. My role at Digby Morgan has given me the opportunity to integrate myself into an established team and learn from true professionals.

What advice would you give to candidates thinking of applying to the Associate programme?

Before applying to the Associate programme I would advise potential candidates to try to get an understanding of the recruitment industry and how it works. Look into the way Digby Morgan works and is structured and consider the opportunities this will offer you. It would also be helpful to have a simple understanding of HR. Also have a think about the qualities a recruiter or graduate will need to be successful in this industry. This information will enable you to get the most out of the application process.
